Bethel’s confirmation ministry has a “longer and later” approach. Our Bethel children begin their first steps toward confirming their faith with CAT classes in 4th and 5th grades – see CAT(echism) under Children’s Ministries for more information.
6th Grade Connections meets every other Wednesday night starting in September. A team of parents and Bethel’s Director of Youth lead this fun, interactive learning experience designed to connect the elementary and middle school segments of our longer and later confirmation programming, the 4th & 5th CAT classes and 7th – 9th confirmation classes.
Traditional confirmation classes are offered to all 7th – 9th grade students every Wednesday evening from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. during the school year from September through March. The confirmation curriculum has been thoughtfully planned to provide a strong faith foundation for our youth in preparation for their affirmation of baptism, which traditionally takes place in the fall of their sophomore year. Classes start with a large group presentation by the class teacher. Students are then divided into small groups for discussion, which is led by parent volunteers. The hour closes with a wrap-up of the information by the teacher.
Bethel’s confirmation classes are open to all 7th – 9th grade students.
Subject areas for each class are as follows:
- 7th Grade – 22 Stories You Should Know
- 8th Grade -Luther’s Catechism: The 10 Commandments, Lord’s Prayer, and Creed
- 9th Grade – Discipleship
Confirmation Crossroads is a series of evening classes for Bethel’s soon-to-be confirmed 10th grade youth. The classes are held in the fall of the year leading up to their rite of confirmation service to create a visual display of their individual faith statement. Their work is then displayed on their Confirmation day.
New Members and Visitors are always welcome. Students can register for confirmation classes at any time by filling out a Youth Ministries Registration packet and returning it to the church office during the week or to the Resource Room on Sunday morning.
Rite of Confirmation
Every fall, an afternoon service is dedicated to the rite of confirmation for all Bethel youth who wish to confirm their faith (traditionally, 10th grade youth). This service takes place the second Sunday in October in the Bethel sanctuary and is held separate from our regularly scheduled services in order to provide the space needed for our confirmands, their family, and friends. Detailed information is sent to the confirmands and their parents in the summer months before they confirm their faith.
Confirmation R & R
Every fall, youth who are confirming their faith are asked to set aside the first Sunday in October in preparation for their confirmation service. Their parents are asked to join them in the evening. The specifics of the day are:
Confirmation Retreat: All youth who will be confirming their faith attend a day retreat at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. The afternoon is spent in preparation for their confirmation service the following Sunday.
Confirmation Rehearsal: Youth return to Bethel after their retreat and parents are asked to join their child to walk through the confirmation service with the pastors and youth director.
Confirmation Dinner: All confirmands and parents are served a dinner by the 9th grade youth and parents, followed by a photo session in the sanctuary. The dinner is a meaningful end to a full day of planning for the rite of confirmation.
